Bayer is voluntarily recalling, in collaboration with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), all unexpired lots of Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6mL (0.2 oz) travel size bottles because these bottles, which are not child-resistant, do not have a required front label statement to that effect. This recall only affects the Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL (0.2 oz) travel size bottles. The 6 mL size is mainly sold at convenience stores or travel hubs like airports and bodegas. Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL bottles are NOT sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Target or amazon.com. All other Afrin® products are sold in child-resistant packaging and are not affected by the recall.

How to tell if your product is part of the recall

This recall involves unexpired travel size Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL bottles, with lot numbers 230361, 240822, 241198, 250066, 250152, 250646, and 250831. These travel size bottles have “Afrin® Original Nasal Spray” and “1/5 FL OZ (6 mL)” printed on a label located on the front of the bottle. The lot code is a six-digit number, followed by the expiration date in the following format: “YYYYMMM”. Please refer to the images on this page.

What consumers should do

Consumers should immediately store the recalled unexpired bottles in a safe location, out of sight and reach of children. Photos of the product will be required for consumers to receive a refund. After taking the photos and completing the refund process, consumers will be instructed to discard the product appropriately. Bayer is also notifying its distributors and retailers by letter and is arranging for returns of all voluntarily recalled products.

    The recall only affects all unexpired lots of Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL (0.2 oz) travel size bottles. All other Afrin® products are labeled correctly.

    The back label currently states “Keep out of the reach of children” but lacks the required statement on the front of the bottle that states “This Package for Households Without Young Children” or “Package Not Child-Resistant.” This language is required for a size of the nasal spray that is not child resistant.

    No. The recall is solely related to labeling/packaging compliance and not the product formulation.

    Yes. The only Afrin® product impacted by this recall is Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL (0.2 oz) travel size bottles.

    Regardless of whether there are children currently present in your household, you should immediately store the recalled product in a safe location out of the reach of children, take photos of the product, and follow refund instructions. Once you have completed the refund request, you should dispose of the product appropriately.

    Bayer is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has notified all our customers and is working to get Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL (0.2 oz) travel size bottles with correct labeling back in stores soon.
